This page provide general information about how we set the price for rides, your liability, and our commitment.
A rare service
Please consider this: if it was easy to operate long-distance, free-ranging adventure rides, a lot of companies would be doing it. Moto Indo was the first to offer this in Indonesia and we still offer a wider choice of ride destinations than any competitor. This type of business creates risks for Moto Indo and we can only operate by returning some of that risk to customers.
We have a detailed Terms document that is part of every offer - please make sure you read and understand it.
Indonesia is not a suitable location for learning to ride a motorcycle. Please get some professional training and experience first. Your ride will be more enjoyable, safer, and you will be less likely to receive a repair bill from Moto Indo.
How prices are set
We have a basic daily rate for each type of motorcycle, with a minimum six days rental. This can very greatly depending on your itinerary, number of bikes in the ride, and how far in the future.
- If we have to move the requested bike so it will be at your start location, we add the cost of freight.
- If you are riding through areas where we have no support agent, we add a support small fee.
- If we do not know whether we will have the requested bike in the requested location, we assume that freight will be needed (this usually happens for rides more than one month in the future).
- Group rides cost more - each additional bike adds to the cost. This reflects our cost of keeping multiple bikes free, including the period before your ride (and potentially also the time needed for freight).
We charge a distance fee
The first 500 km is included with every ride. After that, we charge a small fee for each additional 100 km. We do this because "user pays" is the only fair way to charge for rides. Consider these scenarios:
- Customer 1 rents a bike in Bali for 10 days and covers 700 km, then returns the bike in Bali.
- Customer 2 rents a bike in Bali for 10 days and covers 1500 km riding to Jakarta.
If we are going to recover the cost of servicing and tires, we have to increase the daily fee for all riders. That is not fair for Customer 1 in these examples. Based on a fee of $5 per 100km, Customer 2 pays $50 distance fee, which is reasonable for a ride of 1,500km.
The service provided by Moto Indo is only possible by charring a rental fee that is realistic.
If you want to ride 5,000 km over 6 months, importing your own motorcycle might be a better option and we an also help with that.
Pack smart, be a traveller not a tourist
There are strict luggage load limits for our bikes. We have experienced metal fatigue in the luggage racks due to overloading and rough roads. If you need more than 21 kg of luggage, your travel would be more comfortable in a bus. We do offer freight forwarding for non-essential items.
- 7 kg on each pannier rack (one on each side)
- 10 kg on the top rack
- 21 kg total
Can I rent a GS1300A?
No. And you also can't rent any other type of bike that is not in our selection form. Indonesia has import rules that work strongly against bikes over 250 cc, and there are very limited choices over 150 cc. Very few customers would be willing to pay 5x as much to rent a 450 versus a 150, so we don't offer it. Ride like a local and enjoy the scenery and culture.
You break it, you pay for repairs
Please ride carefully. We trust our customers and expect them to return the respect. If your bike comes back damaged, we will deduct the cost of repairs from your deposit. Don't blame the road, the weather or other vehicles!
It is not unusual for rough handling by staff to cause scratches when you travel on ferries - that's your expense too.
Refunds for terminated rides
No - we will not refund if you decide to finish early. We have many more requests for rides than we can satisfy. If we allocated a bike for your ride, somebody else probably missed out. We could have rented to them instead, so we won't accept the cost of lost opportunity.
Rides to and from other locations
If the location is not listed in our request form, we only support it by special arrangement and a substantial extra cost. You have to cover the cost of sending a truck to carry the bike, and travel plus accommodation for our agent to meet you.
Support and defects
We have a support policy as defined in the Terms. We will always find a way for you to continue your trip, but sometimes interruptions are impossible to avoid. We cannot eliminate the risk of adventure riding in a developing country, but we can make it less risky.
